Note that currently this python is often classed as the same sub-species as the Northwestern or Darwin Carpet Python which is found in Northern Australia.

Snakes from New Guinea show considerable variation in patterning often similar to the variations found among carpet pythons (Morelia spilota)from Northern Australia
